Pronghorns may not be the first creature that springs to mind while thinking about the animal kingdom. These animals are native to North America, and they are often mislabeled as antelopes. Most herds live in the Great Plains, but you can also find them in Oregon and Nevada.

Here are a few more interesting facts that you might not know about pronghorns.

1) Built for Speed

Pronghorns are the second-fastest land mammals in the world. They can sprint up to 60 miles per hour, as the only other mammal that is faster is the cheetah.

2) Long-Distance Migration

Pronghorns hold the record for the longest overland migration in the continental U.S. Some herds migrate up to 150 miles to find suitable habitats.

3) Two Sets of Horns

Unlike most mammals, pronghorn males have two sets of horns. One set grows upward while the other set protrudes from the sides. This unique feature serves both for defense and for sparring during mating season.
