5 Things to Know About Ocelots
Learn a few new things about these cats
Writing about different animals is a favorite hobby of mine. Highlighting facts about animals that aren’t as popular is even more fun. I think ocelots would fit into the category of lesser-known cats compared to lions, tigers, and jaguars.
Here are a few facts about ocelots.
1) Habitat Range Reaches Texas
Most people think ocelots only live in South and Central America. However, ocelots can be found in southern parts of the United States. It’s estimated that 80–120 ocelots live in Texas.
2) Unique Fur Pattern
You will never see two ocelots with the same appearance. Each one has a different fur pattern. Many other animals also have unique patterns, such as zebras and giraffes.
3) Weight and Size
Ocelots can weigh anywhere from 15–30 pounds. The length of most ocelots is around 3 feet. The size of an ocelot makes them more difficult to spot in their natural habitat.
4) Average Lifespan
An ocelot can live around 12 years in the wild. Ocelots can live up to 20 years in captivity. A few of their predators include jaguars, pumas, harpy eagles, anacondas, and caimans.
5) Population in the Wild
Some estimate that 800,000 to 1,500,000 ocelots are in the wild. The population of ocelots is much smaller in the United States. There are efforts being made by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to help reintroduce them into other areas and expand their range.
