Cyber threats are a constant problem on any online platform. One common issue I’ve noticed lately is the number of fake accounts on Medium. These scammers will steal the photo of a writer and pretend to be that person by creating a new account.

I’ve had them reply to a few of my comments. These scammers often want me to contact them on WhatsApp, which is a major red flag!

The best option is to immediately report the account to Medium and block them. It might take a little while, but Medium will suspend the account.

Unfortunately, it can be like playing a game of wack-a-mole due to the prevalence of these scams.

What are the Most Common Signs of a Fake Account?

  • Little to no followers
  • Any mention of WhatsApp or Telegram
  • Low amount of posts
  • Sense of urgency in their message
  • Suspicious links

Don’t make the mistake of falling victim to these criminals. Always staying vigilant is essential to staying safe. Spreading awareness about these fake accounts is also important in protecting others from harm.
