I've had similar stories with a lot of engagement, but low earnings. Reading time probably impacts it, but I think the activity level of the reader is the biggest factor.

You might earn a couple of cents from someone who is really active, but earn $2 or $3 for someone who doesn't engage much at all. So, that makes it almost impossible to predict how well an article will perform because we don't really know the activity level of each reader.
