The earnings are based on the activity level of whoever read your article, so it's possible that one account will give you five cents for full engagement while another gives you 50 cents. I've seen it range from a penny to over $4.

Also, most editors will not see private notes because it doesn't show up in the response tab. Private notes are listed under notifications and gets buried with all of the submissions from a publication and any other notifications.
